<> One of the
advanced
techniques of Temari making is working a multipole division - which is
used to work those patterns that you see that are comprised of hundreds
of pentagons and hexagons - they form much more delicate floral and
geometric
designs as well as others. There is a basic technique for starting with
a regular C10 division and
further breaking it down into finer sections - the final total number
is
actually limited only by the size of the mari and your imagination (or
perhaps patience!).
While the
finished balls worked on these higher divisions look tenaciously
complicated,
working the division is actually quite simple compared to how it looks
once you have deciphered the basic steps. Many of us have been
pondering
pages in Japanese Temari books, searching for all the pieces to come up
with the full set of directions that can be applied to create any
number
of divisions. With thanks to Kiyoko Tibbets of Sophia Books in
Vancouver,
BC Canada (Kiyoko is a delightful Japanese lady, and is the manager of
the Japanese section of Sophia
Books) who provided translation help from a Japanese Temari book
(by
telephone from Vancouver to New York no less!...), and Karen McP. of
Pennsylvania
for working up the actual step by step directions once we figured out
the
general information, here they are. Both Karen and I offer deep
appreciation
to Kiyoko for her generosity and assistance in helping out (or we'd
probably
still be scratching our heads).
Given the intricacy of
patterns worked on these divisions, you should
plan
to use larger sizes of maris - 4 inches or more, and the more divisions
the larger the ball. Otherwise, things will become hopelessly muddled
and
neither will you have any stitching room. And - you need to be in a
point
of your Temari making where you can work a standard C10
division with a fairly high degree of accuracy (starting with a
round
mari too) or things will become quite frustrating. Another
Beginner Tutorial is
offered from Nicole B, tried and true from the Temari Southern Style
2004 Retreat: " Here is a copy of the instructions we used for the
multipole. We figured out a large number of design options with
it, including leaving some of the triangles blank. it should be a
162 (centers) divide. Everyone was whipping them out pretty
quickly, so hopefully all my guinea pigs will let us know if it is
working :o)- Nicole's Multipole
Instructions PDF File. Please remember that these instruction
versions are the result of many hours of effort from the people
involved in preparing them. They are to be used for personal use only -
not for profit, including teaching. Once you have learned the skill
then you can carry on yourself and create your own documents if need
be. Thanks.
