There are a number of reasons
that you might want to use double thead
in your needle when stitching - sometimes just plain old "fast
coverage" - other times it can be specifically called for in a pattern
to add a certain effect or emphasis. It can give some wonderful
results. However, in order for it to be truly effective you need to be
sure that the threads lie flat along side each other and don't twist.
Sue H. offers a neat tip for
using double thread- that also saves your
sanity so that the threads don't twist. "There are an amazing number of
designs that use or can be made using double threads. The challenge is
to keep both threads from crossing and twisting as you lay them down
and stitch. The "secret" is that when taking a stitch, let the threads
lay across where you intend to take the stitch and hold them with your
thumb; then ease the point of the needle between the two threads and
back into the spot to take your stitch. As you pull the threads
through, they will flip evenly without twists."
Another version of this tip is to
take lay the threads, take the stitch and bring your needle up through
the two threads as shown below:
